Porter and Coates Stereoview of Its Store

Porter and Coates was a Philadelphia publisher active in the mid and late 19th century.

Their history began as Davis and Porter (1848-1865) which was succeeded by Davis, Porter and Co. (1865-1866) and then by Davis, Porter and Coates (1866-1867) and then Porter and Coates
1867-1895).
Known for well made books, Porter and Coates' authors included Harry Castlemon, J.T Trowbridge, Edward Ellis and Horatio Alger. It published numerous reprint series which included most author's of the day including Dickens, Verne, etc.

The stereoview above is a look into the Porter and Coates's store. It was located at 822 Chestnut from 1848-1884. Thus this photo was taken between 1867-1884. Unfortunately my eyes are not sharp enough to pick out any specifics from the picture-- But a wonderful look nonetheless.

  1. I have a beautiful book published by Porter & Coates in 1866--Helen Ford by Horatio Alger, Jr. I have looked many places and cannot find a value for it. The cover has "Alta Edition" written on it.

  2. Your book is a reprint. That title was originally published by Loring in 1866. The Alta editions were published between 1887 and 1895. They are very handsome, but not of great value.

  3. I also have questions regarding a book from this publisher: What is the value on The Children's Book of Poetry (copyright 1879) in its original binding and in good condition? How might I find this information out about other antique books if Google doesn't yield any results? And finally, do books of this period require any special care to maintain its condition?
    Cheers!
