Kate Douglas Wiggin-Inscription

Here is an inscription by Kate Douglas Wiggin within a copy of Half-A-Dozen Housekeepers. As she notes this was her first published work many years earlier in St Nicholas.

The prefatory note below which is seen in the later printings of the 1903 Altemus published book (See yesterday's blog) points out that the previous short story has been "revised and extended" into book form.

In 1876 Wiggin submitted the short story to St. Nicholas, a magazine for youngsters published by Scribners. She was eighteen and of course it was submitted under her maiden name of Kate Douglas Smith. It was accepted and she was paid $150 for it. ( A pretty decent sum of money for those days.)
It was published in serialized form in three segments.
